Young Women Face Near-Zero Risk of Cervical Cancer Death Following HPV Vaccination

A landmark study from England has delivered some of the strongest evidence yet of the life-saving impact of HPV vaccination. Researchers found that women who received the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine at the age of 12–13 now face a near-zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before the age of 30. The findings demonstrate not only a dramatic reduction in cervical cancer cases, but also, for the first time, a measurable reduction in mortality, highlighting the vaccine as one of the most successful cancer prevention interventions of recent decades.

A Historic Milestone in Cancer Prevention

Since the introduction of the HPV vaccination programme for schoolgirls in England in 2008, rates of cervical cancer have fallen dramatically among vaccinated generations. The new study reveals an even more remarkable outcome: between 2020 and 2024, no deaths from cervical cancer were recorded among women aged 20 to 24.

Researchers estimate that without vaccination approximately 23 deaths would have been expected during this period. Overall, around 200 cervical cancer deaths are believed to have been prevented in England so far as a direct result of HPV immunisation.

According to the study authors, this represents one of the clearest examples of a vaccination programme successfully preventing a cancer-related death on a population level.

Understanding HPV and Cervical Cancer

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common viral infections worldwide and is transmitted primarily through intimate skin-to-skin contact. While most infections resolve spontaneously without causing symptoms, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types can trigger cellular changes that may eventually develop into cancer.

HPV is estimated to cause approximately 99% of cervical cancer cases. It is also associated with several other malignancies, including cancers of the anus, penis, mouth and throat.

The HPV vaccine protects against the most dangerous viral strains and prevents infection before exposure occurs, making vaccination during adolescence particularly effective.

Real-World Impact: From Prevention to Lives Saved

Until recently, evidence had shown that HPV vaccination dramatically reduces pre-cancerous lesions and cervical cancer incidence. The new data now demonstrate that the benefits extend all the way to mortality reduction.

Professor Peter Sasieni of Queen Mary University of London, who led the research, described the findings as "incredible", noting that a single vaccine has the potential to almost eliminate a specific type of cancer.

Researchers expect the number of lives saved to increase substantially over the coming decades as vaccinated cohorts age and move into the age groups where cervical cancer traditionally becomes more common.

A Personal Story Behind the Statistics

The significance of the findings is illustrated by the experience of Alexandra Legg, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 30, shortly before her wedding. Having left school before the HPV vaccination programme was introduced, she was not offered the vaccine as an adolescent.

Her treatment involved major surgery and months of uncertainty. Although surgeons were able to preserve part of her cervix, her subsequent pregnancy was considered high-risk. Today, she is the mother of a daughter whom she describes as her "miracle".

Alexandra has since become a strong advocate for HPV vaccination and says she will ensure her daughter receives the vaccine when eligible.

Vaccination Success Depends on Maintaining High Uptake

Despite the encouraging results, public health experts warn against complacency. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified a vaccination coverage rate of 90% as a key target for the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem.

Current figures from England show that approximately 76% of girls have received the HPV vaccine by age 15, well below the WHO target.

Cancer Research UK and other organisations are therefore calling for renewed efforts to increase vaccination uptake, particularly in communities where participation remains low.

Public health authorities have also introduced catch-up vaccination campaigns and expanded access through community pharmacies to improve coverage.

The Path Towards Cervical Cancer Elimination

The United Kingdom has set an ambitious goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2040. Experts believe this target is increasingly achievable through a combination of:

  • High HPV vaccination coverage
  • Regular cervical screening programmes
  • Improved public awareness
  • Early detection and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions

While vaccinated women still need to participate in cervical screening programmes, the long-term outlook has changed dramatically.
