This course spans all aspects of vaccinology: from the development of a vaccine candidate capable of protecting from disease to the integration of the vaccine into national vaccination programmes. The first part of the course focuses on the immunological responses crucial for development of an effective vaccine. The second part delves into the challenges involved in clinical trials, safety monitoring, and regulatory processes necessary for vaccine development. The final sessions investigate international policy and challenges to implementing immunisation programs.
This course is accredited by the University of Barcelona and tropEd – Network for Education in International Health.
Requirements
Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in global health and/or vaccine development and implementation. Students should have an advanced level of English, which is the language of instruction for this course.

- How do vaccines work? Harnessing innate and adaptive immune responses
- Long term immune protection and correlates of immunity
- Technical aspects of vaccine development: the preclinical phase (emphasis and examples of malaria)
- Steps in the development of a vaccine: from clinical trials to licensure
- Post-licensure evaluation of vaccine safety and effectiveness
- International policies and financing of vaccines
- Implementation and challenges of vaccine introduction
- Vaccines in the community: acceptability, safety concerns and media responsibility
- From development to implementation: the meningitis and HPV stories
- Challenges in vaccine development: the case of HIV
- Review and future challenges in vaccine development and application
