Are you interested in medical continuing education and work in the USA?
There are four possibilities to work in the USA medically: the USMLE exam, the clinical research, the non-clinical research and a fellowship. You can find more information on this subject in this GI-Mail as well as in the following issues.
If you wish to become a licensed physician in the USA the most common way is through the ECFMG program and by taking the USMLE exam.
The USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) is a series of exams, that have to be passed with excellent scoring in order to become a licensed physician in the USA. These exams have to be passed by both, US American students and foreign applicants. Content and procedure are the same meaning that there are no differences between International Medical Graduates (IMG`s) and US Americans.
The first and most important contact and support for IMG`s is the „Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates“ (ECFMG).
USMLE – 3 Steps, 4 exams:
Step 1:
Basics of Medicine
Anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, interdisciplinary topics (nutrition, genetics, aging, etc…)
Step 2:
– Clinical Knowledge (CK)
Internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, preventive medicine, psychiatry, surgery, etc…
– Clinical Skills (CS) – 12 simulated “patient encounters”
Consists of a series of patient encounters in which the examinees must see standardized patients (SPs), take a history, do a physical examination, determine differential diagnoses, and then write a patient note based on their determinations.
Step 3:
This exam is typically taken during the residency.
Therefore Step 3 is not a requirement to apply for continuing education in the USA, but a requirement for the clinical fellowship.
More information on fellowships in the USA can be found in the following GI-Mail.
