Learn to understand how cultural ideas and practices influence people’s behaviour, health and diseases. The main topics to be covered in this course comprise the following:
(1) Introduction to Public Health Anthropology:
- Cultural ideas and practices relevant to health and disease, as a key to understanding people’s behavior
- Overview of medical systems as cultural systems
- Explanatory models and health seeking behaviour
(2) Research methods in public health anthropology:
- Defining a public health anthropology research question and the appropriate methods
- Overview of tools used for data collection
- Preparing and conducting in-depth interviews
- Methods and procedures for qualitative data analysis
- Analysing qualitative data
(3) Application of anthropological approaches to public health care provision:
- Case studies (e.g. malaria control, HIV/AIDS, community empowerment)

Target Group and Prerequisites
Eligible are public health professionals, project planners and managers, paramedical staff, social scientists and tropEd students. The course is held in English. Fluent English (Reading, Speaking and Writing) is required.
Participants will have to download Nvivo 9 trial version before the course (access information will be sent before the course). Tutorial and trial version have to be installed on personal laptop before the course and participants have to bring their own laptop.

troEd students: EUR 1,000,-
The tuition fee covers coursework and printed materials and a bi-weekly pass for the Heidelberg public transportation system, but does not include accommodation, insurance or other personal living costs during the stay.
